Kris H. Imbrie, LCSW, DVS
I have been working in the field of social work since 1991 and had been an elementary school teacher for the previous fifteen years.
My experience and certification in the field of domestic violence has made clear to me the impact of trauma on the ability of people of all ages to develop to their full potential and experience the happiness they deserve. I have experienced helping adults as well as children process traumatic events, learn to "read" their body reactions as a helpful indicator of their emotional state, and develop tools which empower them to know that they can deal with these temporary states at any time. Clients are given these tools to practice and as they develop expertise in using them, they experience a sense of empowerment and control over their lives.
Losses of many kinds can impact us in a traumatic way. Life transitions can provide great challenges to us as we lose some things and have to adapt to others. Divorce, loss of job, accidents, death, illness, caretaking of others, etc.. may seem overwhelming at times. Our work together will give you ways to monitor and regulate the emotional storms and let go of the unhelpful defenses that have swept over you in the past. As confidence builds, the healing begins.
My graduate studies at New York University enabled me to focus on trauma resolution. Certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and state-of-the-art neurobiological techniques have been pivotal points in developing my expertise. My background in child development and education, an Attachment Theory orientation, and a focus on trauma resolution have been extremely useful in developing effective tools for dealing with child behavior problems. Healing the child within all of us can be a catalyst for future growth.
I have tremendous respect for the mind-body connection and consider the mind and the body all one system. Taking advantage of this through various "energy therapies" expediates the unfolding process of healing. Using this holistic approach has also been helpful to many with pain management needs and has been useful in rectifying psychosomatic illnesses.
I am open to each client's own personal spiritual path and respect all religions. Spiritual focus can be a part of the therapuetic process, according to each client's own particular desire.
